concerns over socially accepted dynamics between children and adults, as well as a morbid fascination with aging, Josefin Arnell’s new body of work invites an array of influences from painterly classics, soap operas as behavioural tutorials, and extravagantly gross food In a tableau vivant starring children portrayed as adults, set in an iconic interbellum celebrity-favorite restaurant in Amsterdam – a “roaring twenties” flashback from the present –we recognise the children in the images as expressly ‘adulting’: acting out behaviors they associate with being an adult, such as being obsessed with work, time, beauty, cute dogs and money, and mirroring the stress they conceive of grownups bordering on slapstick. An hourglass, halved artichokes, empty glasses, and shiny banquet plates of fish, are just a few of the many objects of fascination the artist found in art historical motifs of the still life and cautionary painting narratives, such as the memento mori and vanitas, that are to remind the viewer that we are, after all, but flesh. In addition, other details on the dinner table trace themes of the female coded body’s agency, like breast pumping equipment and cakes honoring Saint Agatha’s cut-off breasts. The series sets out to complicate the different temporalities of youth, aging and adulthood, and the uneasy ties between. A psychological phenomenon called ‘adultification’ is when mature behavior is ascribed to children, oftentimes, with the expectation for them to handle adult emotions and responsibilities way before they are ready. This can hit harder for those socially marginalized, where children of certain groups are treated differently or expected to be mature beyond their age. A child can experience severe pressure to cosplay as an adult to live up to this expectation, with the risk of stunting their emotional growth or creating lifelong behavioral patterns of over-responsibility. Adultification, in short, asks children to be too grown-up, too soon. Moreover, while we may be on our own journeys, battling childhood trauma or not, Arnell is disturbed at how the ideal role that children are commonly assigned, is one of obedience, confirmation to capitalist codes of success, and an essential inferiority to adults — never mind the international conventions of human rights declarations. Although the parental dominance in child-rearing is romanticized as one ‘for their own good’, we can wonder: how much of our treatment of children is personal, and how much is structurally truly fair? Arnell, a filmmaker by trade, experimented with an approach to images by showing the narrative as film stills, working with stand-alone autonomous photography for the first time. As the children were set to work, the artist grew increasingly self-aware with her camera. While the kids used the freedom to interpret their roles, it became apparent that Arnell’s grim vision of how kids would portray aging — including sagging skin, expectations of dramatic plot twists, and the corruption of youth — and how she was by the very nature of this shoot adultifying children’s minds, was short-lived. In her role as director, she met with a world created by the actors, in which adults are at most 25 years old and invariably crave to become famous influencers. This tension is intimately woven into the work’s outcome. Arnell reflects: “I’m looking for the feeling of alienation and awkwardness in group dynamics. In my film works this is often followed by confrontation and misunderstandings that lead to intense action, physical fights, splatter and gore.” As the foods and their unsubtle references are turning lukewarm under our eyes, the actual stories can start to surface. Through drawings, storytelling, sound works, and an exhibition at Konsthall C, the project challenges adult systems of law and morality by asking how children themselves understand responsibility educators, and art educators that uses fairy tale logic and imagination as a tool to look at crime and punishment through the eyes of children. Younger and younger people are increasingly involved in organized crime, both as victims and perpetrators. In relation to the current political discussion in Sweden about lowering the age of criminal responsibility, this project asks: before children become indoctrinated by the laws and punishment systems of adults, regulated by the state, what are their own ideas about justice and accountability? By involving children in the discussion of the wolf’s actions, Josefin Arnell opens up questions around laws, punishment, and accountability from a child’s perspective, using their ideas to think about society at large. Fairy tales are magical worlds that have long been used to teach morality. Many of them are dark, filled with punishment and sin. Together with 60 preschool teachers, 2 art pedagogues, and 500 children, Arnell deconstructed a modern version of the well-known European fairy tale The Little Red Riding Hood. In this reimagined tale, everyone is the wolf, and the story has no fixed ending. Instead, it unfolds through themes of grooming, sibling love, snake eggs, a famous nail salon, friendships, betrayal, popcorn, and many, many wolves. Over the course of a two-day workshop with the preschool teachers, Arnell developed this new story, which was then read to the children. The children contributed by discussing the consequences of the wolves’ actions and by making drawings that extended the story’s path and continuation. The project consists of professional development for teachers, workshops at all municipal preschools in Farsta, Stockholm, and an exhibition at Konsthall C. Konst i förskolan is a method that supports ways for children to express themselves and to make art a habit. For the teachers, it provides inspiring professional development and new tools and methods to work with art and creation. Each year, the format involves around 1,000 children, with about 500 of them as artists. The exhibition BIG BAD WOLF brings together the rewritten tale of Little Red Riding Hood, 600 drawings by children, animations based on their images, and a sound piece where children discuss the many paths of the wolves. These works are presented alongside an installation of a prison imagined for children, complete with a surveillance camera and a series of wolf costumes. The project also extends beyond the gallery through workshops with preschool teachers at Konsthall C, workshops at preschools led by art pedagogues, and accompanying educational materials, connecting the exhibition to everyday pedagogy and artistic practice. Her psychological torment and idealization of this perfect horse are then made terrifyingly real as she eventually starts a transformation into the horse she desires. Fiction scenes are mixed up with archive footage from recent riots and turbulent situations where police horses are utilized weapons to engage in crowd control. Josefin Arnell’s campy blend of B-Movie gore and shaky-cam realism, Beast and Feast follows the inner and outer dramas of its main protagonist, police officer Annina. Juggling many things, she is a single mum navigating a sometimes overwhelming life. Annina wants to fit in, to feel the love and validation of the police, i.e., her colleagues. Gradually she becomes fixated on the perfect horse as the singular solution to her torments and discomforts. To find her way, or at least, her horse, Annina must undertake a series of quests: to deal with emotionally abusive co-workers and fight the stable girl aka life coach to the sound of Stina Fors’ ‘Baby Girl’. Intoxicated by Baby’s farts, she goes through sulphuric hell (the chicken house aka the womb). Will she live up to our, and her own, expectations? Arnell’s Beast and Feast navigates cycles of violence, employing characters in shifting positions of power over another, wherein the abused may become the abuser, shunning the narrative formula of stable ‘good’ protagonists and ‘bad’ antagonists. Here, the police horse, or horsegiirL’s happy hardcore ‘little white pony’, stands in for the ultimate symbol of a living being co-opted and coerced for power. When the public is orderly, it is an approachable interface, and when the public is not, it is here to intimidate and crowd-control you. Visitors and staff take on the roles of vampires, wizards, and zombies who are entangled in a real-estate development scheme to turn the residential neighborhood into a luxury spa resort. Anchored by a Dutch fairytale about the pitfalls of preposterous wealth, the plot and characters were developed in scriptwriting workshops together with the artist. In the process, Josefin Arnell explores the social fabric of a place that is highly specific and at the same time faces the same problems as many other communities. The film draws from and reflects on the historic social ideals of community centers in the Netherlands, that used to serve as a tool to educate the lower classes. What does it mean to be a “good” citizen in the context of increasing wealth disparity, housing shortages, and welfare cuts? Arnell sees storytelling as a form of resistance that can involve different groups of people. Buurthuis 2 brings the community center into the cinema and cinema into the museum by playfully appropriating tropes of horror and fantasy. <img width="1920" height="1200" width_o="1920"
